Troubleshooting and setup process of Linksys Eseries

Linksys E series:

Linksys E series is one of the best routers .All the E series routers come with a Cisco Connect software with them.

The Cisco Connect software allows you to easily configure your router.  By following the step-by-step wizard upon the initial setup of your router, you can have your computer and other wireless devices connected to the wireless network in a matter of minutes.

The software also offers a lot of powerful tools:
such as Security Settings, Guest Access, Parental Controls, and Advanced Settings, which allows you to secure and manage your wireless network.

Setting up your Linksys Wi-Fi Router for the first time with Cisco Connect:

Requirement:

Computer/laptop, Router, Modem, Ethernet cable(1/2), Cisco connect CD.

STEPS:

Check the internet :

First we have to check that internet is working on the computer or not, if its not working then we have to connect the modem to the router through Ethernet cable. Ethernet cable should be connected from the modem into the internet port of router which at backside of the router it’s a separate port on backside. Then open the web browser and check its getting internet or not. Insert the Cisco connect CD into the computer and run the software.

Setting up and installing Cisco connect:

Click on the links provided to read more about license terms and other related information.  At the lower-left portion of the screen, Click Next to proceed. Then it will show you how to make the connection between modem and computer , we have to check that cables are connected acc to the image or not, then hit next.

The next window will show you the set up process and it will show you the increasing percentage starting from 0 ,it will go to 20-25 % and it will stop and give you the router SSID and password we have to note it down, then hit next and it will again continue and show its finishing up the setup and go to 100 %. When its completed it will show you that. Congratulation you are connected to the internet.

Then we have to hit ok. Then it will be back to the main Cisco Connect window after the setup has been finished.  You have successfully installed your Linksys router. Then it will show you the router settings and we can go there and change the network name and password just by clicking on change and it will automatically change the network name and password. We can also turn on/off the guest password through the same window. Now we can close the Cisco connect setup and the process is complete.
Now the computer is connected wireless to your WiFi network.

Errors while running the setup:

If  set up process stops in between and don’t  move ahead in percentage and it gives you blank router SSID and password then we have to reset the router . there is a reset button on bottom of Linksys router we have to press that reset button with the help of a hairpin/paperclip and press it and hold it for at least 30 seconds and we have to continue the same process again and this time it will give you auto generated SSID and password and it will work.

Connecting I pad to WiFi :

We can now connect any wireless device to wifi using the same network name and password that cisco connect provided.

Steps:

We have to turn on i pad and on home screen, we have to tap on icon of setting
Now in setting we have to go for WiFi, it will show you wifi off/on. If its off , then we have to turn it on.
Now below the WiFi, it will show you choose a network and it will show all the networks available then we have to select our network name from that list
Now we have to tap on our network name and it will ask for password , then we have to enter the password and hit join.
It will show you “connecting” and it will connect now your ipad is connected to WiFi and it will show you a check ark in front of ut network name it means your ipad is connected to your WiFi now .
All models of Linksys E series routers can be setup with the same process. This is the basic trouble shooting and process of setting up the Linksys E series routers.

SETUP and TROUBLESHOOTING of Linksys WRT54G

A router is a device that forwards data packets between computer networks.  When a data packet comes in one of the lines, the router reads the address information in the packet to determine its destination, then it directs the packet to the next network. Routers perform the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet.

A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly used to provide access to the Internet. It does not require a wired link, as the connection is made wirelessly.

LINKSYS WRT54G

The Linksys WRT54G (and variants WRT54GS, WRT54GL, and WRTSL54GS) is a Wi-Fi router and is capable of sharing Internet connections among several computers .

SETUP OF LINKSYS WRT54G

1. Begin setup of your Linksys Wireless Router by first plugging in the power. Give it 10 seconds  to initialize and then plug an ethernet cable from modem into the port on the back of the router marked Internet. Next get another ethernet cable and plug one end into your laptop and the other into one of the ports labeled 1-4 on the router. Your computer is now properly connected to the router to begin its setup and configuration.

2. Next open a web browser (like INTERNET EXPLORER) on the connected computer and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press enter. A window will pop up asking for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Enter admin for both the username and password.

3. Next, click on the Wireless tab at the top of the settings screen. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default value to something so that you can identify your network from a list of various wireless available networks. Then click Save Settings and then Continue when the Settings are successful page is displayed.

4. Now click on the Wireless Security section at the top of the page. In order to protect your network from any unauthorized access. Select the Security Mode from dropdown box to select from various security modes like WEP, WPA, WPA2. Finally click Save Settings and then Continue when the Settings are successful page is displayed.

5. Congratulations, Your Wireless Network is now secure.

6. Next you need to select any wireless device and from the wifi settings you have select your own network from a list of available networks and it will prompt for a password when selected, just put the password and then you are connected to the wireless network.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Any wireless device that is connected to your router should be able to access the Internet if there are already computers that are able to do so.  However, if you are having difficulty connecting wirelessly to your network with your computer, you may need to perform the following steps:

1. IP CONFLICT – Check the IP address of the modem. If it is the same as that of the Linksys (192.168.1.1) the internet will not work. So you have to change the router’s IP address  from the ROUTER SETUP page.

2. MAC BINDING – Some times when you connect the router to the computer the internet doesn’t work. So we have to go for MAC BINDING. This uniquely identifies the computer’s MAC address and the internet starts working. We have to go to the ROUTER SETUP page and select SETUP and in the subsection of SETUP you have to go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE. You have to Enable it and then click on CLONE YOUR PC’s ADDRESS. And the Click on Save Settings. The internet will start working. If it still doesn’t work, just pull out the power cable of the router for 5seconds and then plug it back and wait for 20-30 seconds. Wait for the computer to connect with the wireless network and the internet will work.

How to connect a Router with a Smart Sony TV

There are a few major steps that we need to follow while connecting a Smart Sony TV. Once the customer calls up we need to make sure whether the TV has a wireless capacity or not then we need to follow these steps:

1. First we need to make sure that the router that the customer is using is a Wi-Fi enabled one or not.

2. Then we need to know whether the customer has already been using a password or not and its connected with other devices with that password.

3. If the customer has no password and is not having any device connected wireless and wants a password for security of his network then we need to open up the link of his wife router and get into the page of his settings page with the default user name and password.

4. Then we change the SSId name (Network Name) and then we change the Security mode to WPA personal 2 and then we create a security paraphrase as in like the customers phone number and then we save it and we also make sure that it is hard wired from the router so that we don’t loose the remote session.

5. Now as the settings have been saved we ask the customer to turn on the TV and go for the menu option.

6. Now the customer has to look for the settings option first and then for network settings and then for the wireless network, once he finds the wireless network he now has to look for his wireless network name that we created.

7. Now the customer has to select the network name and then he has to select connect it will then ask for the security key or the password he has to type down the password that we saved it in his router settings page and then the customer has to click on connect or join.

Now he has been connected and the wi-fi is working on his Smart TV.
